Why I became an editor

I was torn between English and Art when choosing a major, but ultimately went with the decision to become a graphic designer. I enjoyed that job, but I never stopped reading voraciously and have always been fascinated with what makes the English language so unique and yet frustrating at times! Jumping into proofreading as a career makes so much sense. I'm thrilled that I get to help others improve upon their work with end results they can be proud of.

Background and experience

I’ve worked as a copywriter for TV Guide magazine, as a graphic designer for a megachurch, and, most recently, as a travel agent. Each of these jobs gave me experience in keeping track of every little detail. Each role had so many small moving parts, and it was essential to juggle them all.

Why I love proofreading and editing

It feels a bit like treasure hunting when I'm combing through a piece of writing looking for errors. Ultimately, there is the satisfaction of polishing up someone's writing so they can submit their work confidently. I love that proofreading allows me to help others shine through their writing.

Favorite book:

I love reading a fiction book series that allows me to spend a long time with characters in their world. My reigning favorite is the Outlander series by Diana Gabaldon.

Hobbies:

When I'm not proofreading, I'm usually cooking, baking, listening to music, or all of the above! I love learning about cuisine from around the world and have a long bucket list of places to visit.

Editing tips:

I always read through the entire document first. It gives me a good idea of the tone I should have in mind while proofreading.
