Why I became an editor
As a furloughed bookseller, I seized the opportunity to pursue another career where I would be paid to read! I have exercised my 'red-pen' in the past, and I enjoy the challenge of a word and punctuation treasure hunt. I am an empathetic soul, and promise that any amendments I make will be accompanied by gentle words of encouragement. No hankies will be required!
Background and experience
My proofreading experience includes working on an academic textbook written by the now Head of School of Social Science at Brisbane University. I am also a bookseller with a well-known chain of bookstores in the UK. I have written for their quarterly magazine, as well as having my own column in a Learning Support magazine.
Why I love proofreading and editing
Primarily, I love to read. My friends and family would definitely describe me as a 'wordy' person (I like to take that as a compliment). The English language, with all its quirkiness and challenges, deserves to be written properly, and I enjoy helping people do this to the best of their ability. My brain also likes to be stretched. Proofreading is its own personal trainer!
Favorite book:
Little Women by Louisa May Alcott
Hobbies:
My hobbies include reading (I mourn the good old days where you couldn't guess whodunnit after the third chapter), cooking, and exercising.
Editing tips:
Use the tools Word provides, but remember that nothing replaces an eagle-eyed human. Focus on the individual words of a text rather than its flow by proofreading backwards.
