Why I became an editor
At college, I always enjoyed writing academic essays and helping friends proofread their work. I also edited part of a student journal, which showcased the best of students' work each year in social and political studies.
I was working as a transcriptionist when a friend asked if I could take on some proofreading work on his behalf. Because of this, I started proofreading for ESL (English as a second language) customers and haven't looked back. It's interesting work, and I'm always learning something new.

Why I love proofreading and editing
Depending on the piece of writing, I enjoy making writing flow, or picking up on little inconsistencies that might otherwise be overlooked. I'm a stickler for consistency. If I don't correct it, it will just annoy me! For ESL customers, using connector words effectively is one way to improve flow and ensure greater coherency between sentences. I love sociology and social research, as well as marketing copy. I enjoy the stringency of academic writing, and the creativity of marketing copy.

Hobbies:
Doing cryptic crosswords, watching BTS meme videos, attempting and failing to cook vegetarian dinners.
Editing tips:
Always set aside a few solid hours for proofreading, because you need to get into a flow of doing it. It's not good to have lots of interruptions. Realise how your level of correction could be seen as insulting by a customer, so always assure them that the final decision on an edit is theirs.
