Favorite referencing style

For me, APA is probably the my favourite referencing style purely because this is the style I have had most experience with. But I'm happy to check them all!

Why I became an editor

I studied geology at university, and I love science. But I've always had a passion for the English language; when I went globetrotting, I decided to become an ESL teacher and haven't looked back.

I love the nuts and bolts of the language, the way it holds together, the emotions it can produce, and the many different meanings that can be interpreted in just one sentence. So, being able to proofread really is my dream job as I can help others improve their work and at the same time do what I love.

Background and experience

I have been teaching English for 20 years, during which time I have had the opportunity to work and meet students from all around the world. I have taught and travelled in India, South East Asia, Australia, South America, and the UK.

In my English language teaching career, I have held various positions; my most recent was as an Assistant Director of Studies at a small language school in the UK. This involved running all of the academic side of the school, as well as teaching.

Before this, I worked as an English language tutor teaching English for Academic Purposes (EAP) at the prestigious University of Liverpool, one of the Russell Group universities in the UK. This was where I was really able to cut my teeth writing exam materials for the students, which needed to be to a higher-education standard. My role also involved proofreading and marking all the students' essays, dissertations, and academic work on a whole range of topics from fashion to engineering and business.

Prior to working at the University of Liverpool, I worked with British students as a dyslexia support tutor. In this role, I saw students on a one-to-one basis, proofreading and helping them with their coursework as well as providing them with strategies that would help them at college and university.

Currently, I work part time throughout the year as a writing and speaking examiner for Cambridge Assessment. This role requires a high attention to detail, organisation, and planning as I have a large number of scripts to mark to strict marking criteria in line with CEFR English language levels.

Since the COVID-19 pandemic, everything has been pushed online, and I have continued to teach English to students around the world as well as begun my proofreading journey at Proofed.

Why I love proofreading and editing

I love reading through a piece that I have just proofread and knowing that it reads perfectly. I really enjoy proofreading a variety of topics; with my science background, I enjoy anything to do with geology, geography, environmental science, and biology. I also have experience in referencing, having used it for my own dissertation. But outside of work, I am a film enthusiast, singer, and performer, so I absolutely love proofreading all things creative, too.

Favorite book:

Childhood's End by Arthur C. Clarke

Hobbies:

When I'm not proofreading, you'll find me singing in a choir and performing in a four-part harmony ukulele girl band! Or watching horror films!

Editing tips:

I always read through any document first and quite often highlight in yellow any mistakes I notice without making edits. I find this really helps with scientific docs, too, as you can see which terminology you really need to understand.
