Favorite referencing style
Harvard is my favorite because it's so simple and easy to follow and I have the most experience with it. MLA and APA are close seconds because I have good experience with them as well.
Why I became an editor
From receiving multiple certificates for spelling in primary school up until receiving a first class grade in my Master's Linguistics dissertation, I have always been enthusiastic about English. I then became an English teacher to pass on my love of the language to future generations. Studying linguistics at undergraduate and postgraduate levels also made me recognize that every person holds significant power by simply using a string of grammar, syntax, and semantics to express themselves.
Background and experience
I have my own proofreading business in which I mainly focus on academic proofreading, but I also offer copywriting and editing services. My main background consists of teaching English, both domestically and as a second language. I am currently an English tutor and a special needs TA in a high school. The skills I have gained from this are effective communication, solid leadership, and a strong level of flexibility and adaptability.
Why I love proofreading and editing
My favorite thing about proofreading is helping someone to express their authentic voice in the most effective way possible. Academic proofreading is also extremely interesting, as you learn about many different subjects in each job. I have proofread a range of texts, from PhD theses in Robotics to comedy script drafts for television. The consistent novelty is both exciting and motivating.
Favorite book:
The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue by V.E. Schwab
Hobbies:
I'm usually shopping, writing my mental health blog, doing improv, going out to eat, or watching Netflix.
Editing tips:
I like to read over the text to get an understanding of the topic and how much work I have. My favorite tip is reading each word individually and slowly, forward and backward.
