Why I became an editor
Editing and proofreading was something I had wanted to do for a long time. I stopped working to be a full-time mum to twin girls and realised that I didn't want to work for anyone else. I finally took the plunge and completed two proofreading courses. Managing my own workload lets me do the school run, keep the house clean (as best I can!), and take some time out for myself.
Background and experience
Before the life-changing madness of parenthood, I gained a wealth of experience in the operational side of the FMCG (fast-moving consumer goods) sector. I worked with clients to help them get the most out of data and reports, created data collection methods, cleansed data, and developed reports. I also moved on to manage an operations team and helped them to develop their skills.
I volunteered to become involved in compliance auditing for ISO, which also led to my involvement in PCI and Sarbanes–Oxley compliance. To achieve certification in these standards, I was tasked with ensuring that all processes were documented accurately, kept up to date, and regularly tested. I also proofread all existing documents.
Why I love proofreading and editing
I love reading material that gives a fresh point of view. I enjoy the challenge of understanding the content and helping to make the writing in an article or document draw the reader in.
Favorite book:
Plum Island by Nelson Demille
Hobbies:
When I'm not proofreading, I'm usually feeding children or cats! I also enjoy walking, gardening, baking, doing word puzzles and jigsaws, visiting garden centres, and eating out.
Editing tips:
I proofread each page twice as I work through a document. I also make written notes as I go so that I don't forget any additional feedback for the client.
