Why I became an editor

As a conceptual artist, my studio practice centers around research. Ethnoautobiographic in nature, I am well-versed in many topics, including US history, the African diaspora, graphic design, contemporary art, literature and critical race theory. As a writer, I specialize in creative, business and grant writing. As someone in my community that is passionate about helping people succeed, I became an editor almost by default: by helping colleagues with artist statements and grant proposals.

Background and experience

In addition to studying art, I studied graphic design and interned at the Office of University Relations at Western Michigan University, granting me the unique capability of offering professional creative typesetting and formatting services in addition to editing.

Why I love proofreading and editing

I think that writing and art have the same objective: speaking to an audience. I enjoy empowering people to use their voice with confidence and clarity.

Favorite book:

Lillith's Brood by Octavia Butler.

Hobbies:

When I am not editing, I am making art and spending time with family. I am currently reading Yellow: The History of a Color by Michel Pastoureau.

Editing tips:

As I move down the document, I make corrections and highlight anything that needs more attention. My goal is to be free from distraction so I can focus on meaning, clarity and all the devilish details.
