APA because it's the most straightforward style.

Why I became an editor

I have always been an avid reader, particularly of history. While reading, I often spot errors that have slipped through, and I always wish that I could correct these. Errors interrupt the flow of reading and reflect badly on the author.

I'm also a perpetual student and lifelong learner. My proofreading skills have been helpful here with essay writing. I would like to help others produce their best possible work, too. It's often difficult to spot errors in your own writing, and this is where a proofreader can help.

Background and experience

I have a background of working in law firms as a word processor/document production technician, which involved typing or formatting documents covering a wide variety of topics. I have also trained as a medical transcriptionist and love medical terminology.

I have always proofread my own work on the job and in my academic essays. I have proofread websites and resumes for a career counsellor. I have also undertaken voluntary proofreading for Distributed Proofreaders.

Why I love proofreading and editing

I love finding errors and correcting them. I enjoy reading and love to read anything about history, art history, or archaeology. I have experience with Harvard, APA, and Chicago referencing styles. Proofreading enables me to put my love of reading to good use.

Favorite book:

Wolf Hall by Hilary Mantel

Hobbies:

When I'm not proofreading, I like to read! I usually have three or four books on the go. If I'm not reading or studying, then I will probably be running, walking, or at the gym.

Editing tips:

One technique that I find useful towards the end of a job is to read the document backwards from the end to the beginning. This helps pick up errors I may have missed on earlier readings.

Another technique is to check the endings of each line, where, for example, words may have been doubled up or full stops left out.
