Favorite referencing style
My favorite referencing style is Chicago, although the footnotes can be tricky. I’ve found that, for humanities subjects, it makes checking references much easier for readers.
Why I became an editor
I studied Arabic, political science, international relations, and religion at university. Political and religious coursework required an extensive amount of reading, researching, and writing, and I gained a passion for academic writing! During college, I tutored high school students in ESL who were struggling with their grades, and I did some proofreading work. After graduation, in addition to privately tutoring ESL students, I began proofreading for a professor who was publishing research.
Background and experience
I worked as a server in the fast food and restaurant industry from 2016–2018, like many other young Americans. During college, I did a lot of volunteer proofreading work. After graduating in December 2020 and moving to another country, I briefly taught ESL to kindergarteners and then switched to private ESL tutoring. I also began proofreading for Dr. Hilal H. Alrahbi. During this time, I took Proofreading Academy's course to become a proofreader with Proofed.
Why I love proofreading and editing
Many intelligent people struggle with writing. As a proofreader, I have the opportunity to learn from them, while helping perfect their writing so others can understand it and learn from it as well. I enjoy proofreading and editing all subjects, including creative writing and religious and political academia. I also have some experience with medical research. I used APA, APSA, and Chicago extensively in college and am very comfortable with them.
Favorite book:
My favorite book is Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen.
Hobbies:
When I am not proofreading, I like reading, drinking tea, and taking short walks on the beach because it’s too humid for long walks where I live.
Editing tips:
I leave a comment for every small change and potential issue to help me keep track of how many changes I am making and which ones could impact the document most significantly.
