Why I became an editor

Growing up, I have always surrounded myself with words as an avid reader, lover of puns, student of humanities, traveller and trained translator. As a linguist by trade, my love of language(s) is a passion for beautiful syntax, untangled grammar, flawless spelling and accurate punctuation. Everyone can use language, but not everyone takes pains and pride to do so to a high standard. As an editor, I will treat words like fine food. And as a Frenchwoman, I know what I’m talking about!

Background and experience

I have worked as an in-house translator and language service manager for eight years. I am now a freelance linguist, offering services in translation, proofreading and other language-related tasks.

Why I love proofreading and editing

Proofreading is the ultimate stage of a privileged relationship with words. It is treating words with respect and giving them their proper place, even as you are bending them to your will and making them say exactly what you want to say. When you are proofreading someone else’s work, it is a thrilling challenge to reconcile the objectivity of accurate writing and the person’s thought process, which you can only guess from their own use of language.
