Why I became an editor

I have always loved reading; from a very young age, I was reading books such as Alex Hayley's Roots, Bryce Courtenay's The Power of One, and Dalene Matthee's Circles in a Forest.

The written word can export you to another land, a reprieve from reality; it can educate you, offering you knowledge and truth (or someone's truth). Stories allow you to express your opinions, feelings and emotions. Without the written word, we would not have a first-person perspective on history, and would not be able to share our vision for the future.

I have always loved the art of the written word.

Background and experience

I won the Shakespeare Award for Creative Writing in my final year of school, as well as received a distinction in English. I have been a Creative Director for the past 20 years on various medical journals, natural health magazines and pharmaceutical products; one of my responsibilities is to format, typeset and proofread all the copy before going to print.

Why I love proofreading and editing

I love reading. I enjoy 'meeting' people through their writings and the stories they have to tell. I enjoy researching and expanding my knowledge on the various subject matters. On top of this, I am pernickety in ensuring that any text is concise and clear. I am well versed in what constitutes good English.

Favorite book:

All Creatures Great and Small by James Herriot

Hobbies:

When I am not proofreading, I could be found working on a creative project, gardening or spending time with my children.

Editing tips:

I start the process by reading the copy first and making a mental note on the tone, style, the intended audience, and general feel on what the writer wishes to convey.
