Why I became an editor

A teacher, editor, and writer: I have always had a passion for language and literature. So, all of my education had a connection with linguistics, the world of books, or creative writing. As an undergraduate, I completed a three-year bachelor’s degree in English, became an ESL teacher, and then went to work in several different countries.

Becoming a proofreader was the next logical step in my career. It combines my love of reading, writing and education. It's had a positive impact on my own writing and gives me insight into a variety of subjects I knew nothing about before. Every day's a school day when you're a proofreader!

Background and experience

For the last twelve months, I have been the editor for a China-based marketing group, and I am responsible for maintaining high standards across all of their published content:

-Blog posts

-Newsletters

-Employee profiles

-Online articles

-Sensitive emails

-Website content

-Subtitles and transcriptions

An online article recently caught the attention of CNN, who contacted the employees for interviews and featured the piece on their website. The group's online content is constantly generating new opportunities, recognition, and business for the group.

I am also an associate writer for the British Council’s ChinaNow website.

Why I love proofreading and editing

I love the feeling of having positively contributed to and augmented a piece of writing, and I really enjoy learning about new topics and unfamiliar subjects.

Hobbies:

When I'm not proofreading, you'll find me in the kitchen, the boxing gym, or making preparations for my next adventure.

Editing tips:

Before I start proofreading a document, I like to read through it a few times to get a sense of the content, the author's voice, and the progression of the argument.
