MLA! It's what I was taught first, and it reminds me of my kooky, wonderful high school English teacher.

Why I became an editor

I am a compulsive reader and reverent about the written word. Good writing has inspired and educated me all my life. But I'm not an elitist; if it's written, I will read it!
I was fortunate to school my kids for ten years—a journey that included loads of good books and healthy doses of grammar. That journey came to a natural end, which allowed me to consider a new beginning. Proofreading gives me the opportunity to read broadly and be part of a process that puts more good writing into the world.

Background and experience

I am the go-to proofreader for friends and family, and I proofread documents for organizations in my orbit. I homeschooled my kids for ten years using both classical and traditional approaches; both methods gave me a solid foundation in grammar and the writing process.

Why I love proofreading and editing

Writing is more than the sum of its parts. It's an art that conveys meaning beyond words. When a written piece contains errors or doesn't flow well, it erodes the author's credibility and distracts the reader. Proofreading allows authors to communicate their message clearly and for maximum effect.

Favorite book:

I can't pick a favorite, but I have a soft spot for “Pride and Prejudice” by Jane Austen. I received it as a gift for my twelfth birthday and still read the same copy.

Hobbies:

When I'm not proofreading, I enjoy baking, hiking, and traveling with my family.

Editing tips:

Consider the audience; the writing should serve the reader.
