Favorite referencing style

I am most familiar with Harvard and Oxford University styles, but I also like working with APA.

Why I became an editor

Following my undergraduate fine art degree, I started proofing for an arts magazine and then for other cultural institutions and academics. This continued while I gained my master’s degree and was the perfect way to combine my love for reading and the arts. It is always interesting learning about new subjects through the work. I enjoy the process of helping writers communicate their ideas clearly and concisely.

Background and experience

My proofreading and copy-editing employment over the last 15 years includes the following UK-based clients: MAP Magazine, Talbot Rice Gallery, Collective Gallery, Glasgow School of Art Exhibitions Department, Deveron Arts, PhD candidates, individual writers, and students.

Why I love proofreading and editing

I enjoy many aspects of the proofreading process. I find it rewarding to help a client express themselves clearly through the thoughtful use of language. It is a process that requires great attention to detail and creative thinking, and I like the challenge involved in fine-tuning a text. It is also interesting to learn about new subjects and to gain knowledge in unfamiliar fields.

Favorite book:

The graphic novel Jimmy Corrigan: The Smartest Kid on Earth by Chris Ware. What I most appreciate about this book is the simplicity of its language and its images, which combine to create a rich and deep story.

Hobbies:

If I’m not proofreading, I’m either painting, gardening, walking, or planning my next travelling adventure.

Editing tips:

I always have a notebook on hand to write down any issues that are specific to the author’s way of writing that I need to be aware of. Despite the technology of the laptop I find pen and paper the most useful way to record my thoughts. Also, not a document goes by without frequent uses of Ctrl-F, my favourite function.
