Editor Spotlight: Sheri Johnson

Sheri Johnson has been part of Proofed’s editor network for nearly three years. Based in Maple Valley, Washington, she edits across a range of content types and says one of the best parts of the job is how much she learns along the way.

Sheri’s background is in lab and quality management, where writing and editing were already part of her role. When family commitments made her look for something more flexible, freelance proofreading was a natural next step – and as a self-described grammar nerd, she already had the instincts for it. Outside of work, she recently relocated to Washington with her husband and two kids, and she has been making the most of it by hiking, exploring, and training for a summer pickleball league.

How Did You Get Into Proofreading and Editing?

I became interested in trying proofreading and editing when I was searching for a more flexible work option due to family obligations. I’ve always been a grammar nerd, and writing and editing were already part of my professional responsibilities as a lab manager and quality manager.

What’s Your Favorite Thing About Working for Proofed?

I love learning new things while working on documents! I’ve learned new vocab words, what a dram shop is, that crow’s-feet can be hyphenated, that there is a TV channel devoted to Scientology, and that vibe coding is a real thing.

What Do You Love To Do in Your Spare Time?

Hiking, reading, playing games with my family, and going to musicals, and I’ve been practicing pickleball to get ready for a summer league. I also love traveling with my husband and two kids. We recently moved to Washington and enjoy exploring our new state.

If You Could Own an Exotic Pet, What Would It Be?

Probably a panda – they seem very snuggly.

If You Could Only Eat One Food Every Day, What Would It Be?

I crave variety more than anything else, so it has to be pizza – endless topping combinations and even a dessert option.

Beach Vacation, Mountain Retreat, or City Break?

It’s the mountains for me. The views are breathtaking, and the peaceful forest atmosphere is so relaxing.

What’s Your Favorite Book, and Why?

Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen has been my favorite book since high school. Austen is such a sly writer, and I love spending time in Elizabeth’s world!

My favorite series is now a tie between the Discworld books by Terry Pratchett and The Murderbot Diaries by Martha Wells. The topics in some of the Discworld City Watch books are (sadly) as relevant today as when Sir Terry wrote them decades ago. I was hesitant to read Murderbot at first because of the title, but I was surprised to find that the character is so relatable. Like Murderbot, I am also frequently exasperated by humans and would love to ignore my responsibilities and just watch TV.

Do You Have Any Proofreading or Editing Tips?

I sometimes struggle with beginning an edit and staying focused while working on a document. I’ve found that placing my phone across the room instead of right next to my laptop and using a standing desk helps keep my attention on the assignment.
