Why I became an editor
After working for 24 years in the agrochemical industry, I needed a career change to give me more flexibility. I have always had an interest in language, so proofreading was the perfect choice.
Background and experience
For about 15 years I worked at an agrochemical company, as a biochemist, in a number of lab-based roles. Later I was a data steward, maintaining the accuracy and data integrity of the chemical and biological data in the corporate database. Throughout these roles I was responsible for writing reports, instruction manuals and other documentation and for checking those written by others.
Why I love proofreading and editing
I like correcting mistakes to make the writing appear at its best.
Favorite book:
World from Rough Stones by Malcolm MacDonald.
Hobbies:
Spending time with my family, reading about science, reading novels, gardening.
Editing tips:
I use the search function to search for particular errors such as contractions or double spaces. I also try to read the document through quickly at first, to get an overview, but then go through it again several times more slowly to look at each sentence in turn, in isolation, to check for spelling, grammar and punctuation errors.
